Edited Collection

We Still Here: Hip Hop North of the 49th Parallel is the first published collection of scholarly works about hip hop in Canada. Co-edited with M. V. Campbell, we attempted to take into account the importance of hearing the voices of the artists and participants within the various hip hop cultures all over Canada. We considered geography, community impact, and how to amplify voices that are often pushed to the margins in conversations about hip hop. As one reviewer of the book wrote, “Throughout, the volume foregrounds the generative issues of gender, identity, and power, in particular in relation to the Black diaspora and Indigenous cultures. The contributions of artists in the scene are front and centre in this collection, exposing the distinct inner mechanics of Canadian hip hop from a variety of perspectives. By amplifying rarely heard voices within hip-hop culture, We Still Here argues for its power to disrupt national formations and highlights the people and communities who make hip hop happen.” Along with editing I co-authored the introduction,“Indigenous and Diaspora Reverberations: Hip Hop in Canada and Canadian Hip Hop. An Introduction,” and authored two chapters: “Celebration, Resistance, and Action - Beat Nation: Hip Hop as Indigenous Culture,” and “The Hip Hop We See. The Hip Hop We Do.: Powerful and Fierce Women in Hip Hop in Canada.”
